Eggspectation is a cool restaurant with an easy-going, beach-y vibe. It reminds me of a lazy LA morning, where you go down to Santa Monica to enjoy the beach and then stroll over to a local breakfast cafe when your done with the sun. Okay, maybe I’m a bit nostalgic for home, but this place might just be a bit of a cure for my homesickness. I love the way its set up– it’s quite big on the inside, but also has outside seating– perfect for the coming months when the weather will be cooler. It fits so perfectly within the area of JBR that it’s located in. Although the name might make you think that its a breakfast place, their menu is huge, they have everything from crostinis to pastas, burgers and steaks to flatbreads and crepes. They, of course as the name suggests, also have a ridiculously huge variety of egg-based dishes and other breakfast items.
We came here on a Saturday afternoon after taking little Khalifa to play. The restaurant had many people but it’s not so bad that you have to worry about waitlists, like many of the other restaurants in the newer area of JBR. We were seated quickly and they brought out a baby highchair for Khalifa, as well as some crayons and a coloring sheet, which also had the kids menu on it. Little Khalifa is only 1 year and a few months so he doesn’t really know how to color yet, but that didn’t keep him from trying! That coloring sheet definitely kept him busy for a while.
When I went over the menu, I was seriously confused as to what to get. There are so many different items. For starters, our sweet waitress suggested crostinis, so we went for the Brie and Walnut Crostini as well as the Bruschetta Parisienne. Both were great, but I really enjoyed the Brie and Walnut one, which is a sliced, toasted baguette topped with honey, brie cheese, thinly sliced apples and walnuts. It was sweet and light and the crunch of the apples just makes it so amazing. It was seriously so good that I had to recreate my own version of it this morning, but instead of the brie and walnuts, I used pumpkin seeds. It didn’t really match up to the taste of the ones I had at the restaurant though, so the next time I’m there, I’ll be sure to satisfy my craving and order more of those!
For our drinks, we ordered the Page A Tropical Paradise and the Spa Coco. The Tropical Paradise one could be a breakfast in itself! It’s so filling and has so many different nutrients in it. Spa Coco is lighter and creamy, and goes better with a heavy evening meal. Khalifa had fresh orange juice.
For Khalifa, we ordered the burger and fries from the kids menu. He’s quite the carnivore, so he really enjoyed it. The portion size is huge though, it would have even filled me up. They’re definitely very generous with their portions.
Since it was lunch time, I didn’t want to go for one of the egg dishes, even though they looked sooo amazing (and I’ll definitely be back for them soon), I chose the Fiery Chimichurri Steak, while my husband opted for something sweeter, the Cream Cheese ‘n Honey Flatbread. My filet mignon was so delicious and tender and cooked perfectly to my liking. It came with a chimichurri sauce, a light salad and some amazing sweet potato fries. It was so filling, I had to pack most of it for take away. Seriously, not kidding about the portions! I didn’t get a chance to try a bit of the hub’s flatbread, but he loved it!
Their food is made from simple American concepts, but they use great, fresh ingredients and flavors. This is our new favorite spot to come to after a day at the beach, or even before we begin our day at the beach.
